WHEKI !

The New Zealand Tree Fern, or Wheki in Maori,is a medium-sized tree fern with a tall, slender brown trunk. And the valley behind our house is filled with them.
It produces few fronds, all of which sprout in a horizontal fashion. The fronds form a small "umbrella" on top of the trunk. It has a fast growth rate and they just seem to shoot up in the Spring

Of course, they are endemic to New Zealand.

The koru is the Māori name given to the new unfurling fern frond (above).
They symbolize new life, growth, strength and peace.
It is an integral symbol here in Māori carving and tattoos.
