This, the best known of the New Zealand song birds, is a member of the honeyeater family.
It has been famous since the days of Captain Cook's first visit to this country for its chiming notes, uttered – especially in chorus – just after dawn.
The bellbird, or korimako has a song like the ringing of small bells.
It is endemic to New Zealand, so you won't find it anywhere else.
Now that spring is here the tuis, kingfishers and a bellbird have begun to make their nests in our valley.
It means that the mornings are becoming more noisy, but we don't mind!
