KARANGAHAKE GORGE !

Our intended first stop on our holidays was the famous Karangahake gorge. It used to be a goldmining town and is now a Heritage Site. You can climb and wander for miles along tracks and through tunnels, imagining it in the old days when it was little more than dirt tracks and panting donkeys pulling cartloads of ore.

The gorge then..

The gorge now...

There are remains of batteries and ore pits and the tunnel along the sides of the gorge has ‘windows’ every so often, possibly for air, or light; with spectacular, take-your-breath-away, dizzying views of the Ohinemuri River.

The girls on the bridge...

Despite the swing bridges, and yes, they swung, I made it all the way round. It was a good job we’d brought torches though, there was no light in some stretches of the tunnels and we were imagining giant wetas above our heads (more on them later!) The girls had head torches and so hands-free for when we stumbled.
