OHINEMURI PARK !
Imagine it...it’s the half term holidays, we have two weeks off and we’re driving along on our way to Napier for a week of exploring when suddenly a giant bottle of L&P appears by the roadside.
It was 6.8 metre high, made from 4 manhole size concrete sections for the bottle and a plastic neck.
Naturally, we had to stop and explore why the edifice was there. L&P is a kind of ‘national’ drink. It stands for Lemon and Paroae, and was invented here.
It tastes like a cross between Schwepps lemonade and Sprite, and when we first arrived in NZ my students were horrified that I’d never drunk it and I ended up with cans and cans of it the next day!
At the stop even the bins were in the shape of lemons!
